Safe Water for All – a multi-year research project aims to develop the resilience of water services

Climate change, geopolitics, and an ageing population and infrastructure are challenging Finland’s ability to produce drinking water safely and without disruption. The new Safe Water for All project studies the challenges related to the production of household water and promotes the overall safety of water services.

The Safe Water for All (WaterFall) project focuses on improving water security and the resilience of water supply from the raw water source to the consumer. The aim is to strengthen the readiness and ability of water utilities to anticipate changes and to make long-term decisions to secure the production of household water in a changing operating environment.

The multidisciplinary project identifies and assesses challenges related to the production of household water through risk scenarios and seeks preventive measures that promote the overall security of water services. The project combines spatial data and data analyses, field studies, water epidemic data and legal materials into a comprehensive multi-objective assessment.

The project consortium is led by Ilkka Miettinen, Principal Researcher at the Finnish Institute for Health andWelfare. In addition to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the consortium includes the Finnish Environment Institute, the University of Oulu, the University of Lapland, the National Defence University and DemosHelsinki.

The project, which started in December 2024, will last 3+3 years.
