About the project

Climate change, demographics, geopolitics, ageing infrastructure and the changed security environment are challenging Finland’s ability to produce safe drinking water.

The Safe Water for All project focuses on improving water safety and the resilience of water supply system from the raw water source to the consumer.

Objectives

The aim of the project is to strengthen preparedness and ability of water utilities to foresee changes, and thus make long-term proactive decisions to secure the production and supply of household water in a changing operating environment.

Implementation

The multidisciplinary project identifies and assesses challenges and risks related to drinking water production through scenario analyses and seeks preventive measures that ensure the security and continuity of water supply.

The project combines spatial data and data analyses, field studies, water epidemic data, legal data and various qualitative research methods into a comprehensive multi-objective assessment framework.

The project will be implemented in 2024–2030.

Consortium and funding

The participants in the Safe Water for All project are the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the Finnish Environment Institute, the University of Oulu, the University of Lapland, the National Defence University and Demos Helsinki.

The project is funded by the Strategic Research Council (SRC), which operates in connection with the Academy of Finland.

Safe Water for All is part of the Strategic Research Council’s Water for Welfare, Security and Peace (WAWE) programme, which aims to produce sustainable, equitable and science-based solutions for the management of waters and the marine environment and for strengthening water security.

The Strategic Research Council (SRC), which operates under the Academy of Finland, will fund the programme’s five research projects with EUR 14.6 million in 2024–2030.
